Bessie May Allen Scholarship

Scholarships for students in the College of Professional Studies.

This scholarship was established by Bessie May Allen, Director of the Home Economics Department at UWSP for 39 years. Bessie May Allen shaped the home economics program at UWSP, taking it from a two-year course of study to a four-year program. She was vital in keeping the program alive, bringing it back to campus after the Board of Regents had voted to eliminate it. These awards were granted prior to her death in 1969, and continue to be made possible by her last will and testament.

Gifts from Thomas F. Davis' estate created the Carol Krohn College Scholarship. Krohn was Davis' fiancee and a 1971 graduate of UWSP. She was teaching English and drama at her alma mater, Royall High School, when she was killed by a drunk driver in 1972 at the age of 23. Davis passed away April 18th, 2022, on the 50th anniversary of Krohn's tragic passing.

Chancellor Bernie L. Patterson Scholarship

Scholarships available to first year or transfer UWSP students.

Bernie Patterson was the 14th Chancellor of UWSP, serving from 2010-2021. Patterson has long championed the value of higher education as both an individual benefit to students and as a public good to society. He was instrumental in bringing funds to campus for student scholarships, program funds, professorships and assistantships. He built and nurtured partnerships with local businesses and community organizations, many of which provide internships and careers for UWSP students. Patterson also started the tradition of touching the cupola at the end of both Convocation and Commencement ceremonies. He was particular invested in the success of students and worked diligently to create a culture on campus where all students felt welcome and included.

This scholarship honors Connie J. Antonuk (BS-1986) and Mark C. Martin (BS-1985) of Rhinelander, who both earned degrees in water resources from UWSP.  Connie has enjoyed a career working for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Mark had a successful career as a financial advisor.  Both enjoy the outdoors, especially the Wisconsin northwoods.

Conservation Heroes Scholarship

This scholarship is for students in the College of Natural Resources.

The Conservation Heroes Scholarship provides scholarships for worthy students in the CNR while permanently honoring individual conservation heroes from all walks of life.

Dane County Conservation League Scholarship

This scholarship is available to students who are Wisconsin residents and junior or senior status in the College of Natural Resources.

This scholarship was established in 2018 by a generous gift from the Dane County Conservation League, the second oldest conservation group in Wisconsin. In its early years, the League leased the first public hunting ground in Wisconsin (Deansville Marsh) and purchased 4,300 acres in central Wisconsin for the development of prairie chicken habitat, which, among many other conservation projects, it manages to this day.

Danielle Gorectke was an outgoing 23-year-old woman from Minocqua, Wis. She was an undergraduate student at UWSP completing her degree in communicative disorders. Danielle loved children and especially loved working and helping those with learning disabilities. Danielle’s dream was to complete her speech-language pathology degree at UWSP and become a speech-language pathologist, but her life was tragically cut short. It is the hope of the Gorectke family that this scholarship will help another student reach his/her dream of becoming a speech-language pathologist.

Eric Duffey Costa Rica Tropical Ecology Memorial Scholarship

Scholarships for natural resources majors participating in UWSP's winterim trip: Costa Rica Tropical Ecology (NRES 407/607). Students must have a interests in sustainability and/or renewable energy.

This scholarship honors Eric Duffey, a well-liked and spirited wildlife student who passed away during his senior year in 2012. The Costa Rica Tropical Ecology trip was an experience that meant a lot to Eric. The trip provides a unique opportunity to experience another culture, study various types of ecosystems, learn about countless plant and animal species, study various techniques of utilizing renewable energy and establish bonds with fellow trip mates that last a lifetime.

Geraldine Irene Edwards Memorial Scholarship

A scholarship available to students in the College of Natural Resources.

This scholarship was established in 2019 by Jeremiah Kaminski, a 2017 graduate of the CNR who majored in wildland fire science, in memory of his grandmother, Geraldine Edwards, who “exhibited selflessness and perseverance throughout her years.” Jeremiah hopes this award will honor her memory and pass it forward to help others pursue their dreams.

Dr. Thomas Gibson became the 15th chancellor of UW-Stevens Point on Jan. 11, 2021. Chancellor Gibson’s leadership focuses on enhancing student success and inclusive excellence through purpose-driven education. Created by the Gibson family, including wife, Brigette, and daughter, Kennedy, this scholarship seeks to expand educational access, increase educational attainment and advance the social and economic mobility goals of UWSP.

Gordon Agne Memorial CNR Forestry Scholarships Scholarship

To support scholarships for students in the College of Natural Resources majoring in forestry with preference to students participating in the ROTC program (or other form of military service).

This scholarship was created by the estate of Gordon R. Agne of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. Gordon’s son, Gordon W. Agne, was a 1971 UWSP Forestry graduate and an Army Captain who was killed in a helicopter accident. His father also served in the Army from 1942-45 in the South Pacific. He continued his service in the Army Officers Reserve Corps until 1962 and worked for International Harvester for 35 years.  He died in 2016 at age 95, exactly 40 years after his son. This scholarship honors the memory of Gordon Agne – both father and son

This scholarship is for students majoring in medical technology. Dr. Emil Pagel established this scholarship in the loving memory of his wife Harriet. After Dr. Pagel passed away, the scholarship became the Harriet & Emil Pagel Memorial Scholarship.

Hatfield Sportsmen's Club Scholarship

Scholarships available to junior and senior students from Clark or Jackson counties in Wisconsin who have an interest in natural resources and their protection and improvement.

Established in 1952, the Hatfield Sportsman Club has worked to improve the habitat of Lake Arbutus and its surrounding area in west-central Wisconsin. The Club has expanded its services to include support for a scholarship fund at UWSP, the building of fish cribs, establishing the Oxbow Trout Pond, and promoting aquatic plant growth in Lake Arbutus.

Among the many gifts bestowed by the Vallier family to UWSP, this scholarship endowment honors Jacque Vallier, a renowned high school biology and natural history teacher in Milwaukee who gave thousands of students an appreciation for nature and love of sciences. Created by Jacque’s wife, Dorothy, following his passing in 1996, the scholarship recognizes students for their organization involvement, academic achievement and potential for future success in their chosen field of natural resource conservation. The recipients will be attending the six-week field techniques in natural resources course at Treehaven.

This scholarship is awarded to students majoring in Family & Consumer Sciences (FCS) with a Certified Teacher Education designation.

Catherine (Hill) Lader earned two degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in FCS Education. The education she received at UWSP served her well as a classroom teacher, FCCLA adviser, state supervisor of FCS at the WI Department of Public Instruction, and a member of the National FCCLA Consultant Team. Catherine was heavily influenced by two role models at UWSP-Dr. Fern Horn and Dr. Agnes Jones. Both women were pioneers in the field of FCS and were dedicated to preparing their students thoroughly for a career in FCS. John and Catherine Lader continue to support FCS along with FCCLA and believe every secondary school in the state needs to have an FCS Program.

John Wenger is an Alaska Wildlife Biologist and Naturalist. He graduated from UWSP in 1965 with a B.S. in Conservation and Biology. After serving in the Navy Special Forces during the Vietnam War, he drove to Alaska with a desire to have a career in wildlife conservation. After 13 years of field studies with several state and federal conservation agencies, he returned to UWSP to complete an M.S. degree in nature interpretation. From 1982 to 2000, he taught natural history classes at the University of Alaska at Anchorage. Later, he founded Alaska Natural History Expeditions, guiding teachers and other professionals into remote Alaska wilderness to study and enjoy its natural history wonders. He had a most rewarding career. Now retired, he just sniffs wildflowers and gawks at birds all day.

Judy spent 36 years in the dietetics field, many of which were at St. Michael’s Hospital in Stevens Point. She had a passion for UWSP students in dietetics as she spent time with them throughout her career. In dealing with patients, especially in the dialysis unit, Judy found that they were in inspiration. She hopes that someone can enjoy the profession as much as she did. Creating a scholarship for a student has been a lone time dream for Judy and this scholarship was created to help students who share the same passion for dietetics as she had.

Patti Baird Wimme was a Registered Dietician who received her bachelor's degree from UWSP and master's degree from Case Western Reserve University. During her professional career, which included nearly three years as a nutritionist at the Menominee Tribal Clinic and one and a half years at Great Lakes Intertribal Council, she worked with several young women of considerable talent. These young women lacked the formal education to be admitted into a professional health care field. She felt that all they needed was the opportunity. She started this scholarship to help other talented Native Americans like those young women to become leaders in tribal healthcare.

In 1996, the Richard Frie Memorial Scholarship was established in honor of Dr. Richard Frie, who was an Associate Professor of Fisheries at UWSP from 1989 to 1995. Dr. Frie was also president of the Wisconsin Chapter of the American Fisheries Society at the time of his death. The chapter was established in 1972 with the purpose of fostering the professional development of fisheries managers, scientists, and students in Wisconsin.

Engelhard taught at UWSP from 1965-1991. He was a key driver in achieving accreditation for the forestry major. His friend and colleague, Robert Knowlton, is Emeritus Professor of History and taught at UWSP from 1962-1992 with expertise in 19th century Mexico. His wife, Barbara, taught Spanish at UWSP and was active in faculty governance and the League of Women Voters.

This scholarship was established by Rose ’59 and Don Petersen for students who have a passion for educating and changing the lives of young children. A life long educator, Rose taught adult classes and high school home economics in East Troy and Seattle, but soon after she and Don relocated to Portland, Oregon Rose began working with young children, her passion in life. Rose began and operated several early childhood centers during her teaching career, including centers at the Oregon Health Sciences University and corporate locations. Rose and Don contributed the funds for creation of the Gesell Institute learning kitchen “where life meets learning in the kitchen.” Through this scholarship, Rose and Don will continue to make a difference for the future of both early childhood students and future educators.

This scholarship was created by Rose ('72) & Gary Chriske ('72) to provide opportunity for those who follow in their footsteps at UWSP. They credit UWSP for teaching them how to learn, a valuable skill that provided career flexibility and served as their foundation for success. Rose, an elementary education graduate, spent 30+ year in information technology. She finished her career in the top technical position in her field. Gary, a history graduate, served in the military and had a career that spanned finance and insurance, eventually retiring in middle management.

For 33 years Sue Wilcox worked for the United Way of Portage County, a non-profit organization committed to serving the most vulnerable individuals and families in Portage County. Sue started her work with the United Way as a volunteer serving on the Fund Distribution Committee in 1987 while still a student at UWSP. She became the Director of Planning and Allocations in 1989 and later the Executive Director in 1998. Her work was always to encourage the contributions of time, talent, and treasure on behalf of those most in need. Because of the generous spirit and kindness of Portage County residents, Sue has been grateful to call this wonderful community home.

Scholarships available to first year students majoring in biology or biochemistry.

Sol Sepsenwol has been a faculty member at UWSP since 1978. After receiving both his bachelor’s degree and Ph.D. in Physiology at the University of Chicago, he worked at the Illinois Institute of Technology and Northwestern University Medical School. He was originally hired at UWSP as a human physiology professor, but now also teaches upper-level biology classes that he has developed ranging from electron microscopy to human reproduction. His research on the sperm cell of an intestinal parasite has earned him four research grants from the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health to support his work. Off campus, Sol rock climbs and has guided trips to Devil’s Lake with UWSP pre-med and other students from around campus.

Spud Bowl Scholarship recipients are recognized at the annual fall Spud Bowl football game.

2.5 min GPA
have financial need
reside in the following counties:
- first priority counties: Adams, Columbia, Forest, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Marquette, Menominee, Portage, Shawano, Waupaca, Waushara, and Wood.
- second priority counties: Barron, Chippewa, Dane, Dodge, Door, Dunn, Fond du Lac, Green Lake, Iowa, Jefferson, Juneau, Manitowoc, Marinette, Oconto, Oneida, Pepin, Richland, Sauk, and Vilas
- final priority would allow applicants from the remaining counties in Wisconsin, farm or agri-business background, which includes that the scholarship applicant or applicant's immediate family is actively involved in agriculture; show active involvement in extracurricular activities; display past involvement in community service

This scholarship was established by Steven Heller to recognize involvement in student communication organizations (The Pointer, STV, PRSSA, 90FM, Lambda Pi Eta etc.). This award honors Tim Kroeff, a 1975 alumnus who works for the Wisconsin DNR Sturgeon Bay unit as a Fisheries Management Technician and is a longstanding member of the DNR Northeast Region Dive Team. Tim believes in the field-based education he received at UW-Stevens Point, and this scholarship endowment is his way of giving back to the program that helped him launch his 35-year career in fisheries management. This scholarship is awarded to students who will be attending the six-week Field Techniques in Natural Resources course at Treehaven this summer and serving as a teaching assistant in water resources or wildlife.

This scholarship is in memory of Walter Densch, who was born and raised in Portage County. Walter had a lifelong love for the outdoors, wildlife, and forests.
