Bernie Patterson was the 14th Chancellor of UWSP, serving from 2010-2021. Patterson has long championed the value of higher education as both an individual benefit to students and as a public good to society. He built and nurtured partnerships with local businesses and community organizations, many of which provide internships and careers for UWSP students. This scholarship was established in 2018 by a generous gift from the Dane County Conservation League, the second oldest conservation group in Wisconsin, established in 1933 by citizens interested in maintaining and enhancing habitat for wildlife and fisheries in the area. In its early years, the League leased the first public hunting ground in Wisconsin (Deansville Marsh) and purchased 4,300 acres in central Wisconsin for the development of prairie chicken habitat, which, among many other conservation projects, it manages to this day.

This scholarship was established by Alan C. Buchanan, originally from Lodi, Wis., who earned bachelor's and master’s degrees in fisheries from UW-Stevens Point in 1970 and 1976. Alan enjoyed a 25-year career with the Missouri Department of Conservation, where he became known as Missouri’s mussel “expert,” helping to write the National Strategy for the Conservation of Freshwater Mussels. Alan was the inaugural recipient of UW-Stevens Point’s Worth Scholarship (Fisheries) as a graduate student in 1974. He credits UW-Stevens Point for providing him with a “wide background in aquatic science, which allowed me to be flexible and meet my employer’s needs.” Al met Lynette Densch in grad school, and they are still together today.

Don Peterson, affectionately referred to as Don “there’s a grant for that” Peterson by some of his colleagues, never ran out of ideas. He did, however, bounce them off his friends and acquaintances to gauge whether his ideas and thoughts would result in a doable program. If the idea worked, he gave someone else credit. If it didn’t, he kept working on it until it did. Don was a founder of the Forest Industry and Safety Training Alliance, Wisconsin Consulting Foresters, and Wisconsin Wood Marketing Team. He was a supporter of the Great Lakes Timber Professionals Association and the motivation for the formation of the Timber Professionals Cooperative. He engaged in Forest Stewardship Contracting with the USFS in both Wisconsin and Michigan and managed the Master Logger Program in both of those states. Don will long be remembered for his selfless dedication to the forest industry, especially to loggers, truckers, and foresters he engaged with daily.

This scholarship was created by the estate of Gordon R. Agne of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. Gordon’s son, Gordon W. Agne, was a 1971 UWSP Forestry graduate and an Army Captain who was killed in a helicopter accident on June 23, 1976. His father also served in the Army from 1942-45 in the South Pacific and graduated from Marquette University. He continued his service in the Army Officers Reserve Corps until 1962 and worked for International Harvester for 35 years before retiring in 1982. He died in 2016 at age 95, exactly 40 years after his son. This scholarship honors the memory of Gordon Agne – both father and son.

In 1954, Gordon E. Kummer had the foresight to purchase land now known as “Treehaven.” He was responsible for the 35-mile network of roads winding throughout the property, as well as the planting of more than 175,000 trees. After his death in 1958, his family continued to operate “Treehaven Tree Farm.” In 1979, 950 acres of the tree farm were gifted to the UW-Stevens Point Foundation to serve as a biological field station for the College of Natural Resources. The scholarship supports students attending the six-week Field Techniques in Natural Resources course at Treehaven.

Greg and Annette have raised registered Angus cattle, grown Christmas trees and nursery stock, and operated a garden center. Semi-retired, they are now managing an extensive woodland for timber and wildlife, including 50 acres of prairie. Annette has been an equal partner in managing their business from the beginning. This scholarship honors Herman (1910-2004) and Beatrice (1909-1979) Olson and their longtime stewardship of Steinhaugen, a 280-acre property they transformed from a neglected dairy farm to a diverse, productive natural area. In 2015, the land became the Steinhaugen Recreational Area within the Portage County Parks system. Herman retired as a regional wildlife biologist in Milwaukee with the U.S. Forest Service. For many years, Bea enjoyed searching for unusual plants and reported the first blooming of lilacs to the Wisconsin Phenology Society. This endowed scholarship and the land they called Steinhaugen leave a legacy of values that Bea and Herman exemplified during their lives.

This scholarship endowment was established in 2009 with a bequest from the estate of Jack and Marion Wilson of Fredonia, Wisconsin. Jack was in the wholesale and retail oil business for 45 years and owned the Fredonia-Belgium Oil Company for 20 years. He passed away in September 1994, and Marion died in May 2008. The Wilsons loved the outdoors, and Jack was an avid duck hunter and trout fisherman with a fondness for yellow Labrador retrievers. The Wilsons hoped “to provide assistance to promising students enrolled in the College who demonstrate commitment to the environment and the preservation of our natural resources.”

This scholarship honors the memory of Jim Newman, who was a member of the College of Natural Resources Forestry faculty for 25 years (1961-1985) and served as Assistant Dean. Newman is credited with establishing the forestry major and launching the College’s “summer camp” program, now a six-week summer field techniques course, a highlight of the College’s curriculum. John Wenger is an Alaska Wildlife Biologist and Naturalist. He graduated from UWSP in 1965 with a B.S. in Conservation and Biology. After serving in the Navy Special Forces during the Vietnam War, he drove to Alaska with a desire to have a career in wildlife conservation. After 13 years of field studies with several state and federal conservation agencies, he returned to UWSP to complete an M.S. degree in nature interpretation. From 1982 to 2000, he taught natural history classes at the University of Alaska at Anchorage. Later, he founded Alaska Natural History Expeditions, guiding teachers and other professionals into remote Alaska wilderness to study and enjoy its natural history wonders. He had a most rewarding career. Now retired, he just sniffs wildflowers and gawks at birds all day.

This scholarship is made possible by the Robert & Barbara Knowlton/Robert J. Engelhard Scholarship Fund to honor the legacy of Robert Engelhard, Emeritus Professor of Forestry. A native of Milwaukee, Engelhard taught at UWSP from 1965- 1991. He was a key driver in achieving accreditation for the forestry major at UWSP, and led the development of the CNR's renowned 6-week summer field experience, and the European Environmental Studies Seminar. His friend and colleague, Robert Knowlton, is Emeritus Professor of History and taught at UWSP from 1962-1992 with expertise in l9th century Mexico. His wife, Barbara, taught Spanish at UWSP and was active in faculty govemance and the League of Women Voters.

Susan A. Jones is an accomplished alumna who graduated from the College of Natural Resources in 1980 with a B.S. in Resource Management and minors in Soil Science and Biology. During her time at UWSP, Susan received the Chancellor's Leadership Award, was recognized as the Outstanding Resource Management Student, and served as the Environmental Editor of the Pointer. She later obtained a master's in Planning from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Susan had an impressive 37-year career working with county, state, and federal agencies, where she played a crucial role in improving water resources in Wisconsin, Illinois, and New York. Her contributions left a lasting impact before she retired in 2018. In memory of her parents, Tom and Phyllis of Capron, Illinois, Susan established this scholarship, which serves as a testament to her commitment to education, environmental stewardship, and the legacy she wishes to honor.

This scholarship, for students within the College of Natural Resources, is provided by the Zimmer family and the Safari Club International - Northeast Wisconsin Chapter to honor Thomas “Zoom” Zimmer, a longtime member of the Chapter. “Zoom,” a native of Neenah, Wisconsin, earned his bachelor’s degree from UWSP in 1973. He was employed at Kimberly-Clark as a dedicated volunteer for various conservation organizations, including Safari Club International, Challenge the Outdoors Inc., Wisconsin Bow Hunters Association, and the United Foundation for Disabled Archers. He also served as chair of the Wisconsin DNR Disabled Advisory Council. Tom loved anything to do with the outdoors and was an avid wild game hunter.

This award honors Tim Kroeff, a 1975 alumnus who retired in 2018 from a 40-plus-year career with the Wisconsin DNR Sturgeon Bay unit as a Fisheries Management Technician and is a longstanding member of the DNR Northeast Region Dive Team. Tim believes strongly in the field-based education he received at UW-Stevens Point, and this scholarship endowment is his way of giving back to the program that helped him launch his 35-year career in fisheries management. This scholarship is awarded to students who will be attending a Summer Field Experience or serving as a teaching assistant in water resources or wildlife.

The Walter & Marie Lewis Music Scholarship will open doors for students ot underrepresented backgrounds who may not otherwise study music at the collegiate level. The scholarship sponsor is a UWSP Music Department Alumnus of Color who recognizes that there are structural inequities that make music education more accessible for some than for others.
