Bernie Patterson was the 14th Chancellor of UWSP, serving from 2010-2021. Patterson has long championed the value of higher education as both an individual benefit to students and as a public good to society. He was instrumental in bringing funds to campus for student scholarships, program funds, professorships and assistantships. He built and nurtured partnerships with local businesses and community organizations, many of which provide internships and careers for UWSP students. Patterson also started the tradition of touching the cupola at the end of both Convocation and Commencement ceremonies. He was particular invested in the success of students and worked diligently to create a culture on campus where all students felt welcome and included.

Charles P. Sweet Dean's Special COLS Scholarship

Karen & Ron Sweet created this scholarship in memory of their son, Charles, who passed unexpectedly at the age of 38. The scholarship is awarded to a high achieving student with financial need in the College of Letters & Science. High achievement for this scholarship is defined by academic performance, overcoming unique challenges, work/activities outside of the classroom, leadership, or another form of achievement as determined by the dean's office.

Christine & Stanton Thomas Natural Resources Leader Scholarship

This scholarship endowment was initiated as a tribute to Christine and Stanton Thomas through support from a close friend. A UW-Stevens Point faculty member since 1980, Thomas served as Dean of the College from 2005 to 2020. Both she and her husband, an attorney, are avid outdoorspeople and conservationists. Dean Thomas is renowned for her 40+ year career in education and her efforts to eliminate barriers for women and other citizen groups to become engaged participants in the outdoors. This award recognizes students of junior status who demonstrate the potential to assume leadership roles at the state, national, and international levels.

Scholarships are available to juniors in any UWSP College of Natural Resources major.

Eligibility Criteria:

3.5 GPA min
Demonstrated potential to assume leadership roles at the state, national, and international levels as they mature in their careers.
Must have demonstrated exceptional leadership in student or other organizations, on or off campus.
Strong preference for students of junior year status. Seniors who have at least one more sem may also be considered.

Chvala-Blahnik Family Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Clarann Mullin Stocker and members of the Chvala and Blahnik families in northern Wisconsin as a way to honor their families’ many connections to UW-Stevens Point, including Clarann’s uncles – Clarence “Ted” Chvala, who attended from 1929-1932, and John Patrick Chvala, who attended from 1947-1950 (BS-1953); and her mother, Beatrice Chvala Mullin, who earned a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education in 1934. This scholarship supports a worthy student in the College of Natural Resources majoring in Forestry and attending the Summer Field Experience course at Treehaven.

Connie J. Antonuk & Mark C. Martin Water Resources Scholarship

This scholarship honors Connie (BS-1986) and Mark (BS-1985) of Rhinelander, Wisconsin, who earned degrees in Water Resources from UW-Stevens Point. Connie has enjoyed a long career working for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Recently retired, Mark enjoys fishing and spending time on the many lakes and rivers across northern Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, especially Lake Superior. Connie and Mark are grateful to be able to support tomorrow’s water resource managers.

Conservation Heroes Scholarship

This scholarship is for students in the College of Natural Resources.

The Conservation Heroes Scholarship provides scholarships for worthy students in the CNR while permanently honoring individual conservation heroes from all walks of life. The Conservation Heroes Scholarship fund in the UW-Stevens Point Foundation provides scholarship awards for worthy students in the College of Natural Resources while permanently honoring individual conservation “heroes” from all walks of life. As the fund grows, we hope to pay tribute to a long list of everyday conservation heroes and inspire the students receiving these awards to aspire to be conservation heroes themselves.

Cook-Chappell Scholarship

Awarded to a graduate student in their fourth-year audiology clinical externship based on academic achievement, clinical expertise/performance, and pleasing interactive personality. Students are selected for the scholarship during their third year in the doctoral program.

Copernicus Cultural Foundation Scholarship

Corky McReynolds Treehaven Leadership Scholarship

This scholarship honors the career of Dr. Charles “Corky” McReynolds, who was hired in 1985 as the first director for the College’s new Treehaven facility and held that role for 30 years before retiring in 2015. Under his leadership, Treehaven eventually grew to be a nationally recognized year-round environmental learning center, hosting nearly 20,000 visitors each year, including the College’s renowned 6-week Summer Field Course. This scholarship is supported by an endowment fund created by the Dorothy Kopmeier Vallier Foundation to support students attending the College’s Summer Field Course at Treehaven.

Corteva Agriscience Scholarship (formerly DuPont Scholarship)

To provide scholarships for students in the College of Natural Resources majoring in water resources or soil science.

Formerly called the DuPont Scholarship, this award is made possible through an endowment supported by Corteva Agriscience, a company founded on the rich heritage of Dow, DuPont, and Pioneer. Corteva Agriscience is the only major agriscience company completely dedicated to agriculture. By combining the strengths of DuPont Pioneer, DuPont Crop Protection, and Dow AgroSciences, the company is harnessing agriculture's brightest minds and expertise gained over two centuries of scientific achievement. The Corteva Agriscience scholarship awards excellence in the water resources or soil science field.

Dane County Conservation League Scholarship

This scholarship is available to students who are Wisconsin residents and junior or senior status in the College of Natural Resources.

This scholarship was established in 2018 by a generous gift from the Dane County Conservation League, the second oldest conservation group in Wisconsin, established in 1933 by citizens interested in maintaining and enhancing habitat for wildlife and fisheries in the area. In its early years, the League leased the first public hunting ground in Wisconsin (Deansville Marsh) and purchased 4,300 acres in central Wisconsin for the development of prairie chicken habitat, which, among many other conservation projects, it manages to this day.

Daniel O. Trainer International Studies Scholarship

This endowed scholarship supports students participating in the College’s European Environmental Studies Seminar. Trainer believed strongly in the value of education both in and out of the classroom and the opportunities and relationships each provided. The European Seminar embodies those opportunities. Dean of the CNR from 1971 to 1989, Trainer was involved in wildlife and natural resource teaching and research for over 35 years. Under Trainer’s leadership, the College of Natural Resources grew into one of the largest and premier institutions of its kind in the nation.

This scholarship honors Carol Dehlinger-Putman, originally of New London, who earned degrees in Paper Science & Engineering and German from UWSP in 1989. She has lasting connections to the campus with her father, two sisters, and brother-in-law, who are also Pointer alumni. After working for International Paper, Carol transitioned to higher education as an associate teaching professor and is recognized for prioritizing student success through her advising and mentorship.

To provide scholarships to outstanding Psychology students who have demonstrated promise for emulating the life and work of Dr. Dennis Elsenrath through scholarship, leadership, service in the helping professions, and a commitment to a wellness lifestyle.

Densch-Buchanan Fisheries Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Alan C. Buchanan, originally from Lodi, Wis., who earned bachelor's and master’s degrees in fisheries from UW-Stevens Point in 1970 and 1976. Alan enjoyed a 25-year career with the Missouri Department of Conservation, where he became known as Missouri’s mussel “expert,” helping to write the National Strategy for the Conservation of Freshwater Mussels. Alan was the inaugural recipient of UW-Stevens Point’s Worth Scholarship (Fisheries) as a graduate student in 1974. He credits UW-Stevens Point for providing him with a “wide background in aquatic science, which allowed me to be flexible and meet my employer’s needs.” Al met Lynette Densch in grad school, and they are still together today.

Farming has always been a way of life for Nick and Dianne Somers. They believe that maintaining healthy soils is vital for producing good crops and for the future for agriculture. Graduates of the soils program of UWSP are an excellent resource to support these goals. Our agronomist is a graduate of this program, and we see first-hand how valuable this program is. We feel this scholarship in soils, is a way of supporting our thriving agricultural industry in Central Wisconsin, and supporting the excellent soils program in the CNR, UWSP. Nick and Dianne Somers are owners of Plover River Farms, Stevens Point.

Eligibility Criteria:
- major in any program in the CPS
- demonstrated the qualities of a hero (defined as someone who has shown distinguished courage or ability, is admired for his or her brave deeds, or has noble qualities.)

This scholarship was established by UW-Stevens Point alumna, Karen McCulloch, to honor the memory of her parents, Donald and Eleanor Ansay. The Ansays firmly believed in the value of education. Their four children and several of their grandchildren attended UW-Stevens Point. Karen, herself, earned a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics Education from UWSP in 1975 and a Master of Science in 1978. Dorothy Kopmeier Vallier Treehaven Student Scholar Award

This award honors Dorothy Kopmeier Vallier, a lifelong naturalist, conservationist, and philanthropist from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, who along with her husband Jacque, is a Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame inductee. Mr. and Mrs. Vallier donated the property near Tomahawk, Wis., that is now called Treehaven. In addition to her legacy of support for Treehaven, the College of Natural Resources, and UW-Stevens Point, Mrs. Vallier also founded the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center in Milwaukee. She passed away in 2013 at age 103. This scholarship is presented to a student who will be serving as a teaching assistant for the six-week Field Techniques in Natural Resources course at Treehaven.

Scholarships are available to natural resource students who are planning to attend and serve as seasonal teaching assistants at Treehaven.

Douglas R. Stephens Scholarship

Doug Stephens of Peoria, Illinois, earned a degree in Wildlife Management from UW-Stevens Point in 1991. As a student, he worked on the Wisconsin Black Bear Research Project in northern Wisconsin, eventually serving as project manager. Prior to departing for graduate studies, he accompanied the new manager to train him in tracking bear dens and collaring the cubs in the spring. While in the field searching for a den, Doug suddenly fell ill and died. He was only 23 years old. This scholarship was established to benefit students who share the same passion for wildlife that Doug did.

Downsville Sportsman's Club Scholarship

The Downsville Sportsmans Club, located in western Wisconsin, was initially created to manage the Downsville boat landing on the Red Cedar River and is now involved in many other civic endeavors. The Club established a scholarship endowment fund in UW-Stevens Point Foundation, which supports an annual scholarship for an upper-level student from Dunn County who has demonstrated a commitment to a natural resources career.

Scholarships are available to current students majoring in the College of Natural Resources.

Eligibility Criteria:

Commitment is demonstrated by academic performance, related extracurricular involvement, and community service.
Preferences to students who have graduated from any HS in Dunn County.

Eric Duffey Costa Rica Tropical Ecology Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship honors Eric Duffey, a well-liked and spirited Wildlife student who passed away during his senior year in 2012. This year’s award supports a Wildlife student who has interests in sustainability and/or renewable energy and participates in the College’s annual Winterim Costa Rica Tropical Ecology trip (NRES 407/607), an experience that meant a lot to Eric. The trip provides a unique opportunity to experience another culture, study various types of ecosystems, learn about countless plant and animal species, study various techniques of utilizing renewable energy, and establish bonds with fellow trip mates that last a lifetime.

Erik Munson Memorial Graduate Research Scholarship

This scholarship was developed in memory of Erik S. Munson, a 1991 wildlife alumnus, who passed away in 1992 while working on his doctorate degree. His high scholastic achievement, dedication, and interest in avian biology were the inspiration for a graduate scholarship in his honor. Erik was passionately dedicated to the investigation of the ecology of birds, both in the classroom and in the field. He participated in several student-sponsored ornithological activities and frequently interacted with UW-Stevens Point faculty regarding their avian research. He often assisted undergraduate students with their bird-related interests.

Gordon Agne Memorial CNR Forestry Scholarships

To support scholarships for students in the College of Natural Resources majoring in forestry with preference to students participating in the ROTC program (or other form of military service).

This scholarship was created by the estate of Gordon R. Agne of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. Gordon’s son, Gordon W. Agne, was a 1971 UWSP Forestry graduate and an Army Captain who was killed in a helicopter accident on June 23, 1976. His father also served in the Army from 1942-45 in the South Pacific and graduated from Marquette University. He continued his service in the Army Officers Reserve Corps until 1962 and worked for International Harvester for 35 years before retiring in 1982. He died in 2016 at age 95, exactly 40 years after his son. This scholarship honors the memory of Gordon Agne – both father and son.

Gordon E. Kummer Memorial Scholarship

In 1954, Gordon E. Kummer had the foresight to purchase land now known as “Treehaven.” He was responsible for the 35-mile network of roads winding throughout the property, as well as the planting of more than 175,000 trees. After his death in 1958, his family continued to operate “Treehaven Tree Farm.” In 1979, 950 acres of the tree farm were gifted to the UW-Stevens Point Foundation to serve as a biological field station for the College of Natural Resources. The scholarship supports students attending the six-week Field Techniques in Natural Resources course at Treehaven.

Grand River Marsh Turkey Club, Inc. Scholarship (GL2)

The Grand River Marsh Turkey Club was founded in 1992, in the Village of Marquette, Wis., by a group of sportsmen who wanted to facilitate the survival of turkeys being released only a few miles from town. Today, proceeds from their fundraising activities are used for wildlife habitat, landowner payments, donations to local libraries for outdoor educational materials, outdoor sporting opportunities for disabled persons, and scholarships for students in natural resources.

Great Lakes Sport Fishermen - Ozaukee Scholarship

To provide scholarships to a junior or senior in the College of Natural Resources majoring in fisheries and water resources with a GPA of 3.0 or higher

Great Lakes Sport Fishermen - Ozaukee Chapter (GLSF-OZ) is a 501 (C) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to the enjoyment, preservation, and improvement of the Salmon and Trout fishery on the western shore of Lake Michigan. GLSF-OZ promotes fishing education, conservation, habitat improvement, and boating safety through annual projects, including community fishing derby, Big Brothers/Big Sisters fishing outing, Disabled Veterans Fishing Outing, annual net-pen salmon rearing, and fish hatchery equipment donations.

Great Lakes Timber Professionals Association Scholarship (GL2)

The Great Lakes Timber Professionals Association (GLTPA) was created in 2007 as the result of the merger of several related organizations. Today, GLTPA is a non-profit organization with 1,200 members in Wisconsin and Michigan, including loggers, truckers, sawmills, paper manufacturers, forest landowners and forestry professionals. Greg & Annette Krueger Environmental Education & Protection Scholarship

To provide scholarships to continuing students majoring in environmental education and/or protection who have demonstrated financial need.

These scholarships, sponsored by Greg and Annette Krueger of Jackson County, Wisconsin, are open to students interested in environmental conservation and natural resource management. The scholarships intend to pass along their passion and concern for the environment by helping students learn the complexities of our natural resources and how to preserve them. Greg and Annette have raised registered Angus cattle, grown Christmas trees and nursery stock, and operated a garden center. Semi-retired, they are now managing an extensive woodland for timber and wildlife, including 50 acres of prairie. Annette has been an equal partner in managing their business from the beginning. Greg has degrees from UW River Falls and UW Madison and worked as an agricultural magazine writer/photographer early in his career.

This scholarship is in memory of Henry Kurtz, who had a love for the land, especially pine forests. Henry owned a tree farm in Adams County, which was in the Nekoosa Tree Farm Family and at one time was named Tree Farmer of the Year. The tree farm was donated to the College of Natural Resources by Fred and Ruth Kurtz in 1996.

Herman & Beatrice Olson Memorial Scholarship

To provide scholarships to students in the College of Natural Resources.

This scholarship honors Herman (1910-2004) and Beatrice (1909-1979) Olson and their longtime stewardship of Steinhaugen, a 280-acre property they transformed from a neglected dairy farm to a diverse, productive natural area. In 2015, the land became the Steinhaugen Recreational Area within the Portage County Parks system. Herman retired as a regional wildlife biologist in Milwaukee with the U.S. Forest Service. For many years, Bea enjoyed searching for unusual plants and reported the first blooming of lilacs to the Wisconsin Phenology Society. This endowed scholarship and the land they called Steinhaugen leave a legacy of values that Bea and Herman exemplified during their lives.

A native of Neillsville, Wis., Irving W. Gerhardt taught high school agriculture in Dane County for 44 years. The Gerhardt Scholarships were established through an estate gift to UW-Stevens Point Foundation in 1996 with a gift of over $300,000. Mr. Gerhardt earned national recognition among his peers by receiving both the Honorary American Farmer Degree and the Teacher of Teachers Gold Award from the National Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association.

Professor Emeritus Michael Keller was a member of the piano faculty from 1972 until his retirement in 2009. Professor Keller states, "I was fortunate enough to have obtained both my degrees on full scholarships. I hope this will afford students the same opportunity I was given. I spent my entire teaching career at UWSP and never regretted my decision. I was blessed with wonderful students and faculty for over thirty years.

Jack & Marion Wilson Scholarship

This scholarship endowment was established in 2009 with a bequest from the estate of Jack and Marion Wilson of Fredonia, Wisconsin. Jack was in the wholesale and retail oil business for 45 years and owned the Fredonia-Belgium Oil Company for 20 years. He passed away in September 1994, and Marion died in May 2008. The Wilsons loved the outdoors, and Jack was an avid duck hunter and trout fisherman with a fondness for yellow Labrador retrievers. The Wilsons hoped “to provide assistance to promising students enrolled in the College who demonstrate commitment to the environment and the preservation of our natural resources.”

Jack Lane was employed by the Soo Railroad and stationed in Stevens Point. An avid runner and community volunteer, Jack unfortunately suffered a fatal heart attack early in his life. His family established the Jack Lane Memorial Fund in his honor and contributed the initial support.

Jacque D. Vallier Memorial Scholarship

Among the many gifts bestowed by the Vallier family to UW-Stevens Point, this scholarship endowment honors Jacque Vallier, a renowned high school Biology and Natural History teacher in Milwaukee who gave thousands of students an appreciation for nature and a love of sciences. Created by Jacque’s wife, Dorothy, following his passing in 1996, the scholarship recognizes students for their organizational involvement, academic achievement, and potential for future success in their chosen field of natural resource conservation. The recipients will be attending the six-week Field Techniques in Natural Resources course at Treehaven this summer.

James Newman Treehaven Scholarship

This scholarship honors the memory of Jim Newman, who was a member of the College of Natural Resources Forestry faculty for 25 years (1961-1985) and served as Assistant Dean. Newman is credited with establishing the forestry major and launching the College’s “summer camp” program, now a six-week summer field techniques course, a highlight of the College’s curriculum. Newman’s philosophy, which is still prominent now, is that the college exists to serve students, and students are the college’s best recommendation.

This scholarship honors the memory of Jane and Lawrence Sternberg, longtime residents of Wausau, Wisconsin, who donated 126 acres of land to UWSP in 1992. Proceeds from the sale of the land support this scholarship. Jane and Lawrence were active civic leaders in the Wausau area for many years before passing away in 2007 and 2004, respectively. A successful accountant, banker and real estate developer, Mr. Sternberg was also an avid game hunter and made numerous canoeing trips to the Boundary Waters of Minnesota and Canada. The Sternberg Scholarship supports worthy undergraduate students attending the CNR summer field techniques course.

Jay and Christine Reed Conservation Scholarship

This scholarship honors the memory of Jay and Christine Reed. Jay was one of Wisconsin’s best known and respected outdoor writers who died in 2002. For nearly 40 years he wrote for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and The Milwaukee Journal, demonstrating a passion for conservation and the outdoors. Christine, who passed away in June 2019, served for many years as senior executive secretary to the editor of The Milwaukee Journal. Like Jay she loved dogs, and after Jay’s death she published the book, “Thor & More: The Best-Loved Columns of Jay Reed” and donated the sale proceeds to create this scholarship.

Catherine (Hill) Lader earned two degrees from the UWSP in FCS Education. The education she received at UWSP served her well as a classroom teacher, FCCLA adviser, state supervisor of FCS at the WI Department of Public Instruction, and a member of the National FCCLA Consultant Team. Catherine was heavily influenced by two role models at UWSP, Dr. Fern Horn and Dr. Agnes Jones. Both women were pioneers in the field of FCS and were dedicated to preparing their students thoroughly for a career in FCS. John and Catherine Lader continue to support FCS along with FCCLA and believe every secondary school in the state needs to have an FCS Program. John Wenger is an Alaska Wildlife Biologist and Naturalist. He graduated from UWSP in 1965 with a B.S. in Conservation and Biology. After serving in the Navy Special Forces during the Vietnam War, he drove to Alaska with a desire to have a career in wildlife conservation. After 13 years of field studies with several state and federal conservation agencies, he returned to UWSP to complete an M.S. degree in nature interpretation. From 1982 to 2000, he taught natural history classes at the University of Alaska at Anchorage. Later, he founded Alaska Natural History Expeditions, guiding teachers and other professionals into remote Alaska wilderness to study and enjoy its natural history wonders. He had a most rewarding career. Now retired, he just sniffs wildflowers and gawks at birds all day.

This scholarship was established in memory of Joe Karban, who was a student in the CNR when he was killed in an automobile accident in 1980. In addition to creating this scholarship, Joe’s parents established a student lounge/conference room dedicated to their son’s memory.

Dr. Judith Herrold dedicated 34 years of service at UWSP with teaching, advising, serving faculty governance, mentoring new faculty, and her student advocacy. Her legacy of caring for students continues with this scholarship that supports outstanding students majoring in Athletic Training.

K.A.M.O./Joe Stecker-Kochanski Memorial Scholarship (GL2)

This scholarship was established by K.A.M.O. (Kids And Mentors Outdoors) and Elaine Stecker-Kochanski in memory of Joe Stecker-Kochanski, a 1976 UW-Stevens Point forestry graduate who passed away in 2012. He worked as a ranger and assistant park manager prior to becoming manager of Buckhorn and Roche-A-Cri State Parks. Joe taught hunter safety classes for 20 years and was a founding member of K.A.M.O., which gets kids involved in the outdoors. Joe’s love for the outdoors was only exceeded by his desire to share it with others. The College awards this scholarship to a student who exhibits similar passion and beliefs.

Randy currently serves as Team Leader & Research Soil Scientist for the USDA Forest Service Northern Research Station in Grand Rapids. After graduating in Soil Science as a non-traditional student from UWSP in 1990, Randy earned his master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Minnesota in 1993 and 1996.

Kurowski Family Scholarship (Jeff '88 & Ben '18)

Kyle Keith Memorial Fisheries Scholarship - (GL2)

Kyle Keith of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, loved fishing and believed in preserving the sport for future generations. He always practiced “catch and release” with muskies he caught, hoping they’d grow a few more inches for the next person. He also supported organizations that stocked fish and worked to provide suitable fish habitats in area lakes. Despite being vigilant about boating safety, Kyle tragically lost his life in a boating accident in 2016 at age 30. To honor his memory, his family and friends established this scholarship along with the Kyle Keith R.E.E.L. Fishing Memorial Fund to provide education and resources so that others may enjoy fishing safely.

Martha Sorensen Conservation Scholarship

This scholarship recognizes CNR students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievements and campus and community involvement in the College of Natural Resources. These scholarships were established in 1999 through a generous gift to an endowment from Martha Sorensen, who was a 1929 alumna of UW-Stevens Point’s School of Education. Following graduation, Martha spent more than 50 years as an educator in Wisconsin. In 1960, she was recruited by the State Department to go to Ethiopia and Burma as an elementary education advisor. A pioneer in Wisconsin’s conservation movement, Martha started the state’s first reforestation project on her family’s Waushara County farm in 1937, which eventually grew to over 300 acres of beautiful forestland.

Martini Family Scholarship for CNR

Following his father’s passing in 2007, Harvey E. Martini, Jr. (Conservation, 1967), created the Martini Family Memorial Scholarship endowment as a way to honor and perpetuate the family’s conservation legacy and longstanding ties to UWSP and the Stevens Point community. Honored family members include: Joseph H. and Marie Martini and their children – Richard Martini; Charles Martini; William Martini (’50); Joseph Martini (‘50); Harvey E. Martini, Sr. (’39); Marcelle Martini Hoerl (’42); Duane Martini Daniels; and Antoinette Martini Steckel. This scholarship is awarded to a student who will be serving as a TA for the six-week Field Techniques in Natural Resources course at Treehaven.

Mel H. Cohee Student Leader Conservation Scholarship

A native of Wisconsin and an inductee into the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame, Mel Cohee is widely recognized as a pioneering soil conservationist in Wisconsin and the United States. He promoted effective leadership in natural resource conservation and, in 1967, assisted UW-Stevens Point faculty in developing the Student Chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society (SWCS), one of the oldest chapters in the country. The Mel H. Cohee scholarship was established in 1998 with an endowment that generates market earnings to support scholarships for UW-Stevens Point natural resources students. Michael & Jessina Dineen Conservation Scholarship

To provide tuition scholarships to undergraduate students in their senior year at UW-Stevens Point majoring in a natural resources-related field, including fisheries management, forestry management, game management, land management, game ecology, game biology, environmental management, outdoor communications, recreational tourism, natural resource law enforcement, or other fields of studies pertaining to management, operations, enforcement, outdoor recreation, and natural resources.

This scholarship honors the late Michael and Jessina Dineen, who grew up in Wisconsin's Chippewa Valley. They are remembered for their love and appreciation of the outdoors, their strong conservation ethic, and their enjoyment of sharing it with others. Both were DNR Hunter Education Instructors and served in leadership roles in the Chippewa Rod and Gun Club and the Chippewa Valley Outdoor Resource Alliance. This scholarship, made possible by Jessina's wishes in her estate following her death in 2015, supports undergraduate natural resource majors from the Chippewa Valley region who will be entering their senior year at UW-Stevens Point.

The Musky Clubs Alliance of Wisconsin Inc. is a statewide organization dedicated to improving, enhancing, and protecting musky fishing strictly in the state of Wisconsin. With over twenty member clubs from throughout the state, we seek to do this by supporting fishery research, habitat protection, and education and partnering with the Department of Natural Resources on many projects. This is basically our mission statement. We also serve as a voice of the public when concerns about musky projects and policies have a statewide impact. Promoting our state fish includes sponsoring fishing tournaments for the entire family and donating to help support programs for the young, old, and physically disadvantaged to enjoy time on our lakes and rivers. N. Earl Spangenberg Memorial Scholarship

Dr. N. Earl Spangenberg, a longtime professor of forestry and water resources, started the first student chapter of the AWRA and guided the chapter to create, market, and sell groundwater models used all over the country. Chandler, who graduated from UWSP in 1981 with a major in Resource Management and a minor in Environmental Education & Interpretation, began her career as a naturalist in 1982 in Delaware. She then transitioned to a 20-plus year career as a teacher and environmental educator, where she emphasized connecting to the area's natural resources while integrating community service and service learning into curriculum, teacher training, and student engagement. Always advocating for place-based education, Polly and her husband hope this scholarship will encourage the next generation of CNR students to continue thinking “outside the box” to help others connect to our environment and become good stewards of the land.

Phil Sander Memorial Undergraduate Conservation Scholarship

This scholarship honors the life of Phil Sander, a Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame inductee who passed away in 2006 at age 99. Sander’s contributions to conservation were extensive and often behind the scenes. Among them were his efforts to preserve and protect an endangered tract of native prairie along the Lake Michigan shoreline, which led to the creation of the Chiwaukee Prairie, now one of the largest original tracts of native prairie habitat in Wisconsin. Sander was dedicated to educating future generations on the importance of knowing, honoring, and protecting the natural balance of our natural world. The Wisconsin Extension Master Gardener Program supports a network of individuals dedicated to horticulture education, service, and lifelong learning. Through unbiased university research-based horticulture training, they can address needs and opportunities in their community and throughout the State. Portage County Master Gardener Association began in 1990. The Portage County Master Gardeners (PCMG) are motivated individuals using gardening to make a difference in our community. This scholarship was established by Daniel Rambo in memory of his mother, Rachel Rambo ’80 who passed away in 2014 at the age of 96. Rachel (LeCornu) Rambo was a non-traditional student who completed her education as an adult. She completed high school at age 46 and earned her B.S. in Social Science and Sociology from UWSP at age 63. During her studies at UWSP, she participated in a number of international programs, including study in Spain, Poland, and Asia. Her family hopes students who receive her scholarship will learn much from their travels and value the special qualities of the people they encounter.

This scholarship was created by Maurine and Richard Willey. Richard graduated from UWSP Natural Resources in 1969 and spent his career as an Investigator for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Maurine worked as an Industrial Hygienist, Budget Analyst, and Ceramic Artist. This scholarship is intended to show gratitude to those who instilled in them a love and appreciation for the natural environment and to support current College of Natural Resource students who are preparing to carry on that tradition.

Richard and Joanne Tlachac Hehn Scholarship (GL2)

This scholarship was established by Joanne Tlachac Hehn as a tribute to her husband, Rich Hehn, who died on October 15, 2016, at the age of 66. He was known by his family and friends for his good humor and bear hugs, and as an avid hunter and fisherman. In retirement, he established a career of volunteering. A Vietnam War veteran, he served with the VFW honor guard. Rich was a member of the Daniel Boone Conservation League, the Wisconsin BMW Motorcycle Club, and former treasurer of Great Lakes Sport Fishermen. He also volunteered for the Western New Mexico Aviation Heritage Museum.

Richard V. Frie Memorial AFS Scholarship

In 1996, the Richard Frie Memorial scholarship was established in honor of Dr. Richard Frie, who was an Associate Professor of Fisheries at UW-Stevens Point from 1989 to 1995. Dr. Frie was also President of the Wisconsin Chapter of the American Fisheries Society at the time of his death. The Chapter was established in 1972 with the purpose of fostering the professional development of fisheries managers, scientists and students in Wisconsin.

Robert & Barbara Knowlton/Robert J. Engelhard Scholarship

This scholarship is made possible by the Robert & Barbara Knowlton/Robert J. Engelhard Scholarship Fund to honor the legacy of Robert Engelhard, Emeritus Professor of Forestry. A native of Milwaukee, Engelhard taught at UWSP from 1965- 1991. He was a key driver in achieving accreditation for the forestry major at UWSP, and led the development of the CNR's renowned 6-week summer field experience, and the European Environmental Studies Seminar. His friend and colleague, Robert Knowlton, is Emeritus Professor of History and taught at UWSP from 1962-1992 with expertise in l9th century Mexico. His wife, Barbara, taught Spanish at UWSP and was active in faculty govemance and the League of Women Voters.

She became the Director of Planning and Allocations in 1989 and later the Executive Director in 1998. Southern Brown Conservation Club Scholarship (GL2)

The Southern Brown Conservation Club was established by a group of local friends to help better the environment in the region. With the help of Ray Kliss, they are now a charter member of the Izaak Walton League of America. Southern Lakes Whitetails Scholarship

Whitetails Unlimited, Inc. was founded in 1982 to educate the general public on the importance of study and management of whitetail deer, supporting programs that help ensure the present and future well being of the species and their habitat, strengthening land user/landowner relations, striving to reduce or eliminate poaching, improving the public image of hunters, reducing deer and vehicle collisions, providing guidance on reducing crop loss and improving wildlife habitat, promoting hunting as a deer management tool and encouraging involvement in hunter education programs.

Based on a federal grant in conjunction with the National Science Foundation, this scholarship is meant for incoming students majoring in biology, biochemistry or chemistry.

This scholarship honors the memory of Dr. Stanley Szczytko, who taught at the College of Natural Resources from 1979 through 2012 before retiring in 2013 as a professor of water resources. He coordinated the College’s internship program for many years and served as the Water Resources Discipline Coordinator, always caring deeply about students and the College’s future. Dr. Szczytko was an active and prolific scholar, publishing dozens of scientific papers and authoring three books, eventually earning the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society for Plecoptera and Ephemeroptera. He was employed at Kimberly-Clark as a dedicated volunteer for various conservation organizations, including Safari Club International, Challenge the Outdoors Inc., Wisconsin Bow Hunters Association, and the United Foundation for Disabled Archers. He also served as chair of the Wisconsin DNR Disabled Advisory Council. Tom loved anything to do with the outdoors and was an avid wild game hunter.

Timothy G. Kroeff Field Scholarship

This award honors Tim Kroeff, a 1975 alumnus who retired in 2018 from a 40-plus-year career with the Wisconsin DNR Sturgeon Bay unit as a Fisheries Management Technician and is a longstanding member of the DNR Northeast Region Dive Team. Tim believes strongly in the field-based education he received at UW-Stevens Point, and this scholarship endowment is his way of giving back to the program that helped him launch his 35-year career in fisheries management. Stevens Point musky enthusiast, Pete Stelmacher, founded the 12 Apostles Musky Club, Inc. Pete along with eleven other local anglers fished together for many years and called themselves the “12 Apostles”. In 1977 the group formally organized the 12 Apostles Musky Club Inc. for the purpose of promoting musky fishing in the Central Wisconsin area. The club has stocked 30,667 Common and Tiger Musky’s in the Wisconsin river since 1978. They have also worked closely with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources pit tagging fish since 2001.

Walleyes For Tomorrow was founded in 1991 with the goal of increasing the number of walleye in the public waters of Wisconsin through spawning habitat construction, enhancement and rehabilitation. Worth Company Jazz Scholarship

To provide scholarships for students pursuing Jazz Studies.

Worth Fisheries Scholarship

Scholarships are available for graduate students majoring in programs within the College of Natural Resources. Established by the Worth Company of Stevens Point in memory of Joseph E. Worth.

Preferences:

WI residents, applicants pursuing a career in fisheries or a directly related field, and definite financial need.
Academic and research achievement, professional goals, and extracurricular activities related to conservation/environment should be considered.

Yahara Fishing Club Scholarship

Based in Madison, Wisconsin, since 1946, the Yahara Fishing Club has been dedicated to fishing activities, conservation, social activities, education, and promoting habitat improvement and protection projects such as shoreline/stream bank improvement and lake access. Besides hosting fishing outings for all ages, monthly meetings, guest speakers, and fishing seminars, the Yahara Fishing Club devotes special attention to improving fishing conditions for the disabled and taking political action on issues that impact fishing. This scholarship is awarded to a UW-Stevens Point student from Dane County majoring in Water Resources or a related field with good academic standing. To provide scholarships in the School of Education for future teachers.

Zabel Family Scholarship

Scholarships are available to students of the College of Natural Resources, working toward a career in Environmental Education and Interpretation.

Eligibility Criteria:

3.0 GPA min.
Financial need.
Preference to students involved in volunteer services, activities, or organizations.

This scholarship was established by Chris and Cheryl Zabel and their son/daughter-in-law, Nathan Zabel and Amanda Samson. This scholarship is a reflection of the family’s lifelong passion for natural resources and a strong belief in the importance of serving others.
